Underwater Man

I’m writing a new song. I can’t believe it. I’m forming new callouses and getting my hand muscles back. It’s been a while since I’ve sat down with the guitar. But finally there is reason. Finally there is:

We may have found my father. Through ridiculous and humiliating DNA tests, coupled with filling out my mother’s family tree as far as possible (I’m a daughter of the Revolution, been here since 1600’s). He was born in Santa Monica and moved to Hawaii. He became a pioneer in digital underwater photography.

Introducing, father Jim.

The song, surprise surprise, is about him.
There is more to the story of course. He has two kids that he left behind. His son has a daughter roughly the same age as V. His daughter lives in… San Francisco! Of all places. I know this because I searched for them on the internet. I think that I look more like him than they do. But they probably exude him profoundly more than I do.

I must say, I really think I would have liked him. I cried, I mean wept two nights in a row when I discovered he was dead. He died not very long after I began my search, 7 years ago. It feels good to come from somebody who did extraordinary things. I can be proud of myself. I can be proud of who I am and where I come from. Sort of.
